Kate Campbell

Tell us a bit about yourself?

I love all things creative including singing (my other job) I am passionate about healthy living and love animals, kids & old people, they can all teach us so much if we take the time to listen. The ocean is my jam along with food, wine, family and friends. Kindness is everything. Oh and travel, I love to experience different countries, cuisines and cultures.

What brings you joy during the festive season?

Christmas decorations, the giving of gifts, days on the beach, family and holidays.

What Christmas traditions do you enjoy?

Christmas morning at my parents with my hubby & children. Christmas lunch, beach cricket and seeing my brothers, sister-in-laws, nieces and nephews.

What is your favourite Christmas book and/or movie?

What is your favourite Christmas book and/or movie? It’s a tie between National Lampoons vacation and Home Alone.

Finish this sentence. My wish this Christmas is….that my youngest son who is 8 years old will learn to communicate, become toilet trained and gain some level of self-independence in the near future.

Kate O’Donaghue

Tell us a bit about yourself?

I like ticking boxes on lists (it’s been a busy day!) I love being with family and friends, especially my kids and my super dog Bill. Breathing in nature, exploring new places, meeting new faces and music makes me happy. I appreciate colour and good design and I do a bit of art and craft making for fun.

What brings you joy during the festive season?

Being with family and friends, preparing and sharing special food and wrapping and giving fun gifts! I really love leaving gifts under Giving Trees for charities like the Salvation Army… Christmas must be heartbreaking for those who are facing hard times – it makes me feel a little like I imagine Santa must feel.

What Christmas traditions do you enjoy?

We have a large and loving extended family and we have many celebrations together across the festive season. We like going to outdoor mass on Christmas Eve and we sometimes have had parts in the nativity scene re-enactment. My kids always leave out carrots, biscuits and beer for Santa and he usually leaves a letter for them along with presents stuffed in stockings and stacked under the tree!

What is your favourite Christmas book and/or movie?

I just adore the The Jolly Christmas Postman by Allan Ahlberg and Janet Ahlberg. And An Aussie Night Before Christmas by Yvonne Morrison is a book that was published just before my daughter’s first Christmas and we’ve been reading it during the festive season ever since.

Finish this sentence. My wish this Christmas is….for peace on earth (which starts in each of our hearts and homes).

Hey! I’m Holly. Wife, Mum and chief TopKnot maker at TopKnot Girl. I like being creative, kicking goals, trying new recipes and enjoying time with my family.

What brings you joy during the festive season?

I LOVE doing special acts of kindness during the advent season. I am a lover of giving, and I go into overload at Christmas. It brings me much joy!

What Christmas traditions do you enjoy?

We have recently started a ‘countdown to Christmas’ box. We do themed books, crafts, treats and PJ’s for the kids. We also love Christmas movies, going to carols/events and Church. We have a big lunch, followed by gifts and then usually a swim. I love Christmas.

What is your favourite Christmas book and/or movie?

I LOVE the Home Alone movies at Christmas, these are so fun to watch with the kids. We read the Christmas Story from a children’s book and also enjoy ‘The Night before Christmas’ book on Christmas eve.

Creating Christmas Memories with Kimberly of K-Rae Designs

This Christmas interview is with creative director and illustrator, Kimberly of K-Rae Designs. In this post she shares her love of coming together as a family at Christmas and decorating gingerbread cookies. Also if you are looking for a gift for a friend (or yourself!) Kimberly’s Check Yo’Self journal is perfect!

Tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Kimberly and I’m the Creative Director of K-Rae Designs. I’m a digital artist located in Brisbane and I design and sell greeting cards, prints, stickers, custom portraits and my latest baby – Check Yo’Self creative journals

What brings you joy during the festive season?

The coming together of family. I absolutely love the joy it brings me to be around my family (Mum, Dad, Sister and Brother-in-Law). I don’t get to see them often as they live in Darwin, so when I get to spend a Christmas with them… it’s the absolute best.

I also love decorating gingerbread cookies with my kids while we listen to tacky Christmas songs.

What Christmas traditions do you enjoy?

Growing up we used to always go and spend Christmas at a hotel in the city…overlooking the ocean. Different I know, but it was “our” thing we’d do with my immediate family as we didn’t have extended family around to spend Christmas with. We felt like we were living the high life and spoiling ourselves for Christmas. I love and miss that but want to start it up with my lil family, maybe this year perhaps!

My other Christmas tradition we picked up over the last couple of years is baking and decorating gingerbread men. So much fun and many laughs.

What is your favourite Christmas book and/or movie?

My alllll time favourite Christmas movie that my sister and I have watched EVERY Christmas since we were kids…is The Grinch. We know all the words and still laugh during the funny moments. I’ve now past my love for the Grinch onto my kids and they want to watch it even when it’s not Christmas haha. Another MUST watch at Christmas time is Love Actually ❤️ (of course).

Finish this sentence. My wish this Christmas is….that all borders will be open in Australia so everyone can spend  Christmas with their loved ones. It’s been a BIG year.

What brings you joy during the festive season?

From festive foods, glittering tinsels and carols, we love all things Christmas! We love gathering with the ones we love the most!

What Christmas traditions do you enjoy?

Now our Christmas is very centered on Aiden, we love spoiling him with gifts, building gingerbread houses and baking Christmas cookies together.

What is your favourite Christmas book and/or movie?

Home Alone of course! But Aiden’s favourite is the Grinch!

Finish this sentence. My wish this Christmas is….to get back with all our family and friends! It’s been a difficult year with COVID-19 and we hope we can celebrate Christmas together with the ones we love the most!

Sprinkling Christmas magic with Alexis from The Festive Co.

This Christmas interview is with stylist and owner of The Festive Co, Alexis. In this post Alexis shares her love of all things Christmas and making family traditions.

Tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m a writer, stylist and owner of a fun business called The Festive Co! I do everything from style events to conceptualise photo shoots, host craft workshops and write stories for magazines and websites. I’m a mama of three awesome little people, two boys who are 6 and 4 and a little girl who is 1. My husband and I lived in Sydney for a good 15 years and moved to Adelaide, my home town, a couple of years ago. It’s been the best, most joyful time introducing all my fam to this beautiful city.

What brings you joy during the festive season?

Pretty much everything! I absolutely love Christmas time. But if I had to choose, it’s definitely carols, the smell of fresh Christmas trees and choosing pressies for my friends and family. I start early so I can really take my time finding just the right things. I even have a pink fake Christmas tree for my office! I’m very committed to festive decorations.

What Christmas traditions do you enjoy?

Our family actually lived interstate until a couple of years ago, which meant that every single Christmas would be with our extended fam and we alternated between husband’s family in Victoria and mine in SA. So until two years ago we hadn’t actually woken up in our own home on Christmas morning and we were really light on traditions.

Once we moved to Adelaide, it was time to start some! We now go and pick a tree as a family at a beautiful, sustainable Christmas tree farm in Chandlers Hill and I hope my kids will remember visiting it the same way I look back on picking a tree at the same farm.

I’m so lucky that my mum kept some of our childhood Christmas decorations like a big Santa cookie jar, a light up ceramic tree and a nativity set. Just looking at them makes me think of Christmas magic and I hope my kids will feel that in years to come. Oh, and I always buy the kids matching Christmas jammies – even my husband and I wear them if I can find a full set!

And of course we get our visiting elf (on a shelf) on December 1! His name is Fomp which our eldest chose haha. He doesn’t get up to too much mischief yet, but maybe he will this year, we’ll see.

This year I’m starting a new tradition and I’m planning on the kids making air-dry clay Christmas tree ornaments. The clay is so easy to use – no need to bake it – I can even get Andie making one. I think they’ll be fun to look back on over the years.

What is your favourite Christmas book and/or movie?

Favourite book is definitely The Jolly Christmas Postman! I loved the original Jolly Postman as a kid (of course!) and mum would pull out the Christmas version in December too. My kids get such a kick out of it but I have to pop it away each night so they don’t lose all the letters that are tucked inside the book.

My favourite Christmas movie is The Family Stone. I watch it as I’m wrapping presents and it never fails to make me laugh and cry. The cast is next level.

Finish this sentence. My wish this Christmas is….that everyone gets to spend time with their families this year and no one is alone and isolated. It’s been such a tough year for so many people. I’m hoping that festive magic will be sprinkled far and wide.

Spreading love at Christmas with creative director Patti

This Christmas interview is with creative director and illustrator, Patti of Pizza Night. In this post she shares her love of making gingerbread houses from scratch and their family ‘Gladvent’ calendar tradition, which I’ll be adding to our festive season!

Tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Patti, I am a creative director and illustrator living on the Mid North Coast of NSW. We moved from Sydney a few months before COVID-19 hit, in an effort to spend more time together… little did we know! Louis and Margot love to get sandy, muddy or drenched after school. We are always losing shoes in creeks and taking too many rocks home from the beach.

What brings you joy during the festive season?

Seeing the kids’ faces when they wake up and remember what day it is, giving presents, eating ham, making brunch, munching the reindeer’s carrot and sipping Santa’s beer the night before. Last year we were in Bali, so the snacks looked a little different!

What Christmas traditions do you enjoy?

We love to do what we call a ‘Gladvent Calendar’’; in the days leading up to Christmas, instead of chocolate, we write nice notes about each other and pop them in the toy letterbox. It could be anything from “I love papa because he helps me get down from a tree.” Or “I love Louis because he knows lots of whale facts.”. We also make a gingerbread house every year. It’s a lot harder than you think to make it structurally sound. But it is about the journey, embracing the mistakes along the way and, of course, the sugar!

What is your favourite Christmas book and/or movie?

Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas. Hands down. The best. The kids love it too, with blankets over eyes for some parts. Have you seen it?

Finish this sentence. My wish this Christmas is….that everyone feels connected to someone that makes them feel magical. I really miss my mum, dad, sisters and their families. We are different states and my head knows it’s for the greater good but my heart is a little bit broken thinking about Christmas Day. We will just have to get creative this year.

Christmas crafts with Eleanor of Mini Mad Things

This Christmas interview is with creative maker, Eleanor of Mini Mad Things. In this post she shares her love of Christmas crafts and making. Also Eleanor has a new book UNBOXED, perfect for Christmas gifting!

Tell us a bit about yourself?

I am a maker. I grew up in a house where we made things. We learnt to sew and to knit; to saw, hammer and build. My Mum baked bread every day and we grew vegetables. We learnt to fix broken things. We were resourceful. All of these skills made me who I am and ignited my love for craft. This passion for making is something I would like to pass on to my children and to others.

What brings you joy during the festive season?

For me Christmas is all about hanging out with family and friends and relaxing together. My favourite part of Christmas is making all our own Christmas decorations with my kids to hang on our tree. Im also pretty keen on all the tasty food!

What Christmas traditions do you enjoy?

I’m originally from the UK so I am still a little confused that Christmas is in the summer (even though I have been living in Australia for over 10 years), but I’m also confused about why Australians decorate their houses with snowmen and snowflakes etc in the summer? So I guess I’m still figuring out my own Christmas traditions!

What is your favourite Christmas book and/or movie?

The Snowman has been a favourite since I was little.

Finish this sentence. My wish this Christmas is….without wanting to sound too cheesy, I wish for world peace. I wish we could all just get along and then focus together on the much bigger issue of looking after our planet and climate change.

If you would like to know more about Eleanor, you can follow her on Instagram , or visit her website Mini Mad Things.

Christmas traditions and kindness with illustrator Jana

The first in our Christmas interview series is with me, Jana (aka Tinsel the Elf) creator of North Pole Post. In this post I share what I enjoy during the festive season and my wish of kindness this Christmas.

Tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m Jana, an illustrator and mama. I spend my days drawing positive art, and making cards, pillows and journals for Word Finders Club. I’ve now added another hat, and I’m also the head post Elf for North Pole Post!

What brings you joy during the festive season?

Togetherness, slowing down, making, child-like wonder and magic bring me joy during the festive season. I found, especially last year, that slowing down and bringing mindfulness and presence during December brought me so much joy. I took the pressure off and leaned into what I loved as a child at Christmas. Making gingerbread, listening (and singing along badly!) to Christmas music, looking at Christmas lights and spending time together as a family.

I started North Pole Post last year in December and I can honestly say making and sending the letters brought me so much joy. Seeing my son Harry’s face light up reading his letter from Santa, which he found under the tree was a Christmas highlight. I really feel that seeing the festive season with child-like wonder brought the magic and joy back into Christmas for me.

What Christmas traditions do you enjoy?

Last Christmas I got back into writing Christmas cards and I so enjoyed it. Writing a card was a moment for me to reflect on the year and show gratitude to the people in my life. I also enjoy our tradition of going to our local Christmas Pageant and then putting up the Christmas tree because Santa Claus has come to town!

Making is also a big tradition in our house, whether it be baking gingerbread or creating a seasonal wreath or advent calendar filled with slow festive activities. I’m really not sure how Christmas will look this year, but I know that togetherness, comfort and joy will be so important.

What is your favourite Christmas book and/or movie?

It would definitely be Tosca’s Christmas! Reading this book started as a Christmas tradition when I was a child and now I read it to Harry. I love watching Elf, Love Actually and The Holiday. I do also enjoy a good, cheesy Christmas movie. Netflix always have some great ones during the festive season, like the Christmas Prince!

Finish this sentence. My wish this Christmas is….that we can be kind. Kindness to others, by sharing what we can whether it be a smile or a donation to a food bank. Also that we can be kind to ourselves, to slow down and listen to what we really need to fill our cup this festive season.
